Turtle is one of the most commonly encountered defensive positions in jiu-jitsu, and a wide variety of attacks, turnovers, and back takes are available for the top player. Despite this, it is often overlooked and neglected in training compared with other grappling arts like Judo and wrestling.

In this video, Kingston Jiu Jitsu Head Instructor Marc Barton shares three simple yet effective turnovers that were taught to him by his teacher, the renowned Mauricio Gomes, who is also the father of the legendary Roger Gracie. Mauricio is known for his strong attacking game from the top turtle position, and Marc endeavours to pass on as many of the crucial details that he learned from him as possible.
