Nic Featured on ‘Grappling Dummy’ Series
Matt Benyon (www.thegrapplingdummy.com) was kind enough to feature jiu-jitsu brotherhood in his latest production. There’s an interview with Nic as well as a demonstration of his new ‘shadow grappling’ drill. Enjoy.

great vid! hey nic, just want to thank you for encouraging me to take up bjj at 34, now i am 2 years in and fully addicted. found the brotherhood via that early blog, got inspired and sent you a message about starting and you kindly replied. having lots of fun and evolving, slowly but surely here at rga brooklyn. keep up the good work nic and alexis!
Nic, what I really like about the first half is how readable the fights are. A lot of the time, when one looks at tournament footage, there’s just a confused heap out of which something random happens with no apparent reason. But what you’ve given us is much clearer and it’s possible to recognise each moves being prepared and executed – so the viewer can think along with the fighters.
Any chance of taking some of your own fight footage and annotating it with a voiceover and occasional slo-mo? A commentary telling us what your thinking was, what your choices were – what you chose and why you chose it. When we’re on the mat, some of us have trouble recognising situations in time to respond to them properly. This is why we can often do techniques ‘in captivity’ that we then can’t deploy ‘in the wild’.
Oli Geddes tried something like this once, by adding captions to one of his YouTube fights, but it’s not ideal. No slowdown when things happen fast; and worst of all, reading uses the oppposite side of the brain from spatial perception. You have access to better production resources… try to do one: it could be good!
Great video. I like watching smooth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Thanks for all the moves you included in this video.
Thanks for sharing this. As was really able to asborb the techniques in this video as opposed to some other mashed together video clips. Nice work. Classy.
Sweet video. The rolling had a great flow to it. You can tell the quality of the player by the smoothness of the techniques.
That video just realized a big weakness in my game. I think I need to work on getting off the flat of my back. Thanks I’m gona try some of this in class.
please post more when you have some down time.
I was ispired to here that BJJ is not over once you leave the mat, a fellow class mate who is a blue belt guided me towards jiu jitsu brotherhood and now I’m so impressed from what I have read and seen so far. I will continue to follow as I progress, looking forward to many great lesson from yourself and Alexis.
